Baja Mining Corp. confirmed a fatality involving Boleo personnel. Kyoung Jin Park, COO of MMB, drowned in the town of Santa Rosalia, located adjacent to the Boleo project, by a flash flood attributable to heavy rains from a storm. In addition, Sung Keun Chai, CEO of MMB, who is thought to have been with Park at the time of the incident, was reported missing. Baja has been advised that the Mexican authorities continue their search for Chai.

Sokalsky will be appointed as the non-executive chairman of the board of directors upon the retirement of Patrick Reid, current chairman. Sokalsky was president and CEO of Barrick Gold from June 2012 to September 2014. John Haflidson has been retained as senior mining advisor to work in developing the Borden Gold project.

Svein Richard Brandtzaeg will stay on as president and CEO of Norwegian aluminum company Norsk Hydro ASA. After Brandtzaeg notified the Hydro Board of Directors in July that he would resign to become president and CEO of Norwegian fertilizers company Yara International ASA, the board asked Brandtzaeg to reconsider. Brandtzaeg decided to withdraw his resignation and stay on as CEO of Hydro.

Freeport-McMoRan appointed Mike Kendrick president-Climax Molybdenum Co. Kendrick has been with Freeport-McMoRan since 1997, and in 2009, moved to his current role of vice president-operational improvement, Freeport-McMoRan Mining Co. He will succeed Dave Thornton, who retired after 36 years.

Sunshine Oilsands announced the resignation of David Sealock as interim president and CEO. Executive Chairman Michael Hibberd has assumed direct responsibility for all CEO tasks and functions. Sealock has been with Sunshine since 2008 and has served in the role of interim president and CEO since December 10, 2013. Songbo Cong has been appointed senior vice president, engineering. Cong has been the vice president, special projects since June 2013.

Former managing director and project developer, David Sproule, will assume the role of executive director. Ken Osland has been appointed as a non-executive director to replace Terranova. Sierra Metals Inc. announced the resignation of CFO Fernando Piccini. Victoria Vargas has joined as vice president investor relations and corporate communications. Previously, she held roles with Iberian Minerals, Romarco, Greystar Resources and most recently, Scorpio Mining.

U.S. Energy Corp. announced that president and COO Mark J. Larsen will retire effective December 31. Larsen has been employed by the company since June 1984 and he was appointed as its president and COO in August 2005.

Andrew and Nicola Forrest were awarded honorary doctorates by The University of Western Australia for their outstanding service to the community of Western Australia, to the nation and beyond. The Forrests have demonstrated outstanding leadership in philanthropy and community service. They are the first Australian signatories of the “Giving Pledge,” which is a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Through the Minderoo Foundation, they launched national and global initiatives to address indigenous disparity through employment, to end the scourge of modern slavery, and to create opportunity for disadvantaged children through education. They have also both been active in shaping the nation throughout their careers, most recently with Forrest chairing the Review on Indigenous Employment and Training on behalf of the prime minister of Australia, and as councilor of the Global Citizen Commission, reporting to the U.N. General Assembly in 2016. Andrew Forrest is chairman of Fortescue Metals Group.

Columbia Steel announced that Tony Miotke has accepted the position of dragline product engineering manager. Miotke joined Columbia Steel in 1999, having previously served as lead engineer for dragline products.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. announced that Executive Vice President, Finance and Administration John W. Prosser Jr. plans to retire after 40 years. Jacobs is now conducting an active search for a CFO, and Prosser is expected to remain in his position during the transition.
