New Millennium Iron officials have announced the first shipment of direct shipping ore (DSO) from its project jointly run with Tata Steel Minerals Canada.

The MV Sterling, with a cargo of 77,000 tons of iron ore sinter fines, left the Iron Ore Co. of Canada’s terminal facilities in Sept-Îles, Québec, on September 14 from the terminal at its new Pointe Noire Dock. The vessel will discharge in Europe for Tata Steel Europe’s plants; commercial sales are pending.

New Millennium President and CEO Dean Journeaux enthused of “a singular milestone” for both companies. “Production and rail haulage from the project are now well established,” he said. Tata Steel owns 26.3% of New Millennium.

The company-owned Millennium Iron Range, in Newfoundland, Labrador and Quebec provinces, is home to of the world’s largest undeveloped magnetic iron ore deposits. With two advanced projects, the range hosts 64.1 million tons of proven and probable reserves and 25 to 30 million tons of historical resources along with other tactonite deposits.
