Nornickel, the world’s largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel and a major producer of platinum and copper, has resumed ore mining at one of two mines that were shut down due to flooding earlier this year. The Oktyabrsky underground mine has recovered its daily mined volume to its full capacity of 14,100 metric tons.

“Water pumping from the horizons of the Oktyabrsky mine has been completed,” said Nikolay Utkin, senior vice president and head of the Norilsk Division. “Ore extraction and operation of its two shafts has been restored and the mine is now operating at its design capacity.”

The Taimyrsky underground mine, which was also temporarily suspended due to flooding, is on track to resume operations shortly. The completion of water pumping and production restart are scheduled for early June, according to Utkin.

“By June 1, we are planning to gradually restart ore mining operations at Taimyrsky,” Utkin said.
