Local media on Minnesota’s iron range is reporting that Cleveland Cliffs is restarting its Northshore mine in Babbitt and the plant in Silver Bay in early April. The company idled the operation in May 2022, laying off more than 450 workers.

Cliffs said it will provide more details when it decides when and at what capacity this operation will be brought back online.

Northshore produces direct-reduction iron ore pellets for electric steel furnaces. At the time of the shutdown, Cliffs said steelmakers were using more recycled steel.
