Caterpillar reported the new Cat 789 truck delivers class-leading power and fuel efficiency, more payload capacity, and better speed on grade for the lowest cost per ton. The 789 replaces the current 789 Stage V/Tier 4 Final model.
The next-generation 789 comes with either a 1,417- or a 1,566-kW Cat 3516E engine, which is fuel-optimized for lesser regulated countries. The engine can be configured with selective catalytic reduction for meeting EU Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final standards.
“Offering smoother transitional shifting for a smoother ride, the 789’s Advanced Power Electronic Control Strategy transmission delivers productivity and efficiency improvements that can reduce cycle times,” Caterpillar said.
Multiple body style configurations are available. “Superior braking and retarding control for the 789 is delivered by Caterpillar’s patented, oil-cooled, multiple disc brakes to provide immediate, fade-resistant braking and retarding,” Cat said.
The new truck features design improvements to the cab. ROPS/FOPS certified, the new cab offers better visibility and a fatigue detection solution.
“At 17% wider, the cab’s walk-through design with fully adjustable center console offers 34% more operator space, 11% more legroom and 19% more shoulder room,” Caterpillar said. “Featuring 40% less sound pressure level, the quieter cab includes automated temperature control and cab filtration for a more comfortable environment.”
Two 254-mm screens display machine data, controls and guidance information, and applications like Cat MineStar. The screens offer an interface for speed coaching, the payload monitoring system, and the 306° surround-view camera.
“Fully integrated Cat electronics on the 789 includes 100 Mbps, two-wire ethernet connectivity for faster data transfer to improve access to information,” Caterpillar said. “The future-proof technology platform includes every 789 being factory-equipped with Cat Product Link Elite with standard connectivity via cellular 4G/LTE and available cellular/satellite radio for reliable data transfer.”
A new telematics platform offers greater data acquisition and faster transmission to applications such as Cat MineStar Solutions.
The new truck is easier to maintaince than the previous model, Caterpillar said. The modular HVAC system can be easily removed, repaired or replaced. The modular radiator can be repaired or rebuilt off the truck.
The truck has “extended-interval filters with ground-level access, grouped service points and a new centralized service center option,” Caterpillar said. “It features an extended 12,000-hour coolant life and double the hydraulic and transmission filter life to 1,000 hours to reduce service time.”
The new 789 uses less fuel than does the Tier 2 design. “An advanced powertrain increases engine life by 12% and delivers better shifting and acceleration,” Cat said. “Offering the highest horsepower in its class, this mining truck features 10% more payload and is over 5% faster on grade than competitive trucks.”
