Following a 10-day notice by union representatives, and a failure to resolve outstanding issues, unionized employees at Kinross’ Tasiast mine in Mauritania have begun a strike, according to company officials.

Kinross officials said in a statement that they remain open to re-commencing negotiations with union reps, and will update as appropriate. The Tasiast mine in the sparsely-populated Sahel nation produced approximately 185,000 gold equivalent oz in 2012.
