Siemens has been selected by Sinclair Knight Merz to support expansion by Rio Tinto for port facilities at Cape Lambert. Cape Lambert’s Port B project will handle additional iron ore capacity from the Pilbara and is one of the largest such projects Australia has seen in recent years.
The infrastructure will expand the port’s iron ore export capacity by an additional 123 million metric tons annually, according to company officials. Siemens will provide 18 GenIV Robicon Perfect Harmony drives, 18 H-Compact, 1,400 kW, 6.6V, 6 pole motors, and eight Simotion control systems for these two phases. The drive systems will be used on eight conveyors—inloading, outloading and wharf conveyors—before transporting iron ore from the stockyard to the shiploaders.
The project will be executed first by commissioning three conveyors for completion in Q3 2013. Deliveries for the five conveyors of the second phase remain in progress; full commissioning is slated for 2014.
