MTU displayed the newest generation of its Series 460 and Series 906 engines at the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM) Conference and Exhibition, which was held during May in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The MSHA-CANMET-certified Series 906 engine is underground-optimized for use in all underground mining. The Series 460 is being introduced for hard rock underground mining with plans to seek MSHA-CANMET certification in the future. Both engines have wide application in powering loaders, haulers and drilling equipment. Additionally, both engine series can be equipped with factory-installed SCR exhaust after-treatment, making them EPA Tier 4i certified for above-ground use.

“MTU engines are well suited for both underground and surface mining, delivering power and acceleration while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions,” said Scott Woodruff, global director of mining sales, MTU. ”They also have a low noise factor, which is especially relevant for underground mining applications.

MTU offers both the Series 904 and Series 906 for underground mining applications. The Series 904 is configured as an inline 4-cylinder with power ratings from 75 – 130 kW (101 – 174 bhp) and a total displacement of 4.8 liters (293 cubic inches). On display at the show will be the MTU Series 906 engine, which is configured as an inline 6-cylinder with power ratings from 150 kW to 205 kW (201 to 275 bhp). It has a total displacement of 6.4 liters (391 cubic inches) and four valves per cylinder, and features turbocharging with charge-air cooling. The latest generation of this series can be equipped with factory-installed SCR exhaust after-treatment. The engine series meets MSHA-CANMET underground standards and, when equipped with SCR, meets EPA Tier 4i standards for above-ground use.

The MTU Series 460 engine is configured as an inline 6-cylinder with a power range of 220 to 375 kW (295 to 503 bhp). It has a total displacement of 12.8 liters (781 cubic inches) and four valves per cylinder, and features turbocharging with charge-air cooling. Engines with SCR after-treatment have engine-mounted SCR components that include the DEF dosing unit. Vehicle-mounted SCR components include a combined SCR catalyst and muffler, DEF supply unit and SCR control unit.
