The Peruvian Service of Environmental Certification for Sustainable Investments (Senace) approved the modification of the environmental impact study (EIS) for a tailings project at Minsur’s San Rafael mine.

The $344 million project will re-process tailings to extract tin concentrates using a new mineral processing facility. Located in southern Peru, the mine is the country’s lone tin producer, and the EIS modification considers the impact of the reuse of the tailings deposit.

In related news, Minsur reported in late March that San Rafael sustained no damages and is operating normally despite recent heavy rains and flooding in the northern and central regions of the country. The company is working closely with the Peruvian Government, the National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE) and subsidiaries of BRECA Group on a number of diverse initiatives to help storm victims.
