Following a court ruling, Swedish iron ore producer LKAB has been allowed to restart operations at its Gruvberget open-pit mine. “This is good news for the district, employees, contractors, and for our company,” said Per-Erik Lindvall, director of technology and business development, LKAB.
In June 2012, LKAB closed its Gruvberget operations after an environmental court order denied an application for a separate open-pit mine in Svappavaara, 4 miles southeast of Kiruna. Following a new ruling, however, LKAB’s mining and processing activities have been reinstated at the mine that employs about 100 people and is located 16,000 miles northeast of Stockholm.
