On July 1, MMG Ltd.’s Las Bambas copper operation in Apurimac, Peru, achieved commercial production, according to the company.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Michelmore said the ramp up of the plant has been achieved on schedule and commercial production reached in line with guidance to the market. “Las Bambas is a world-class operation that is transformational to MMG,” he said. “Its successful ramp up delivers on our commitment to drive value for shareholders. MMG is emerging as a major copper player — continuing to invest in the down cycle with the support of its major shareholder China Minmetals Corp.”

Copper production commenced in the fourth quarter of 2015 and first concentrate was achieved on November 26. The first shipment of product departed the Port of Matarani for China on January 15. In the first quarter of 2016, the operation produced 31,470 metric tons of copper in copper concentrate.
