Flooding Affects Coal Operations in South Africa’s Limpopo Province

Following a record 500 mm of rainfall in the past five days, Coal of Africa Ltd. (CoAL) has been forced to shutter its Vele Colliery in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Over the course of a normal year the mining site sees 450 mm of rain. Vele currently has a stockpile of 5,500 metric tons of thermal coal, while producing 7,000 saleable metric tons weekly. CoAL expects normal operations to resume in approximately seven days subject to receding rainfall. Limpopo province borders Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
