In response to recent widespread bush fires across Australia’s New South Wales, BHP Billiton is donating $473,000 to Red Cross emergency response work in the province from the top miner’s Sustainable Communities charity.

BHP will further donate $2 for every employee-donated dollar through a Matched Giving Program.

BHP Billiton Coal President Dean Dalla Valle said the company has long-time, tightly knit relationships with local communities where two of its core coal assets are based.

BHP Billiton has 4,130 employees and contractors in New South Wales, with operations including Illawarra Coal’s metallurgical coal operations, the Mount Arthur Coal mine in the Hunter Valley and the Caroona Coal Project near Quirindi.
