Barrick Gold has received a resolution from Chilean environmental regulatory officials requiring the Canadian company to complete its Pascua-Lama water management in accordance with its permit before resuming construction activities. The Chilean authorities fined Barrick $16 million for deviating from certain requirements of the project’s Chilean environmental approval, according to company officials—these include a series of reporting requirements and instances of non-compliance. Operations on the Chilean side of the Pascua-Lama project, which straddles the border with Argentina, were suspended and Barrick is currently reviewing the situation.
