Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) and Agrium announced this week that once the anticipated merger transaction closes, the new company will be named Nutrien. According to the two companies, the new organization will be the global leader in reliable, low-cost crop nutrient production, combined with the largest agricultural retail-distribution network in the world. The regulatory review and approval process for the merger continues and they expect it to close in the third quarter of 2017.

The two companies announced a merger of equals in September 2016. Then, in November 2016, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved the transaction to be implemented by way of a plan of arrangement under the Canada Business Corporations Act. Shareholders of both companies overwhelmingly voted to approve the proposed merger of equals.
