Top power and automation technology group ABB has won a major order for an electrical equipment package from Mongolyn Alt Corp. (MAK) for its greenfield copper and molybdenum project, Tsagaan Suvarga, in Mongolia. The site is located in the Eastern Gobi Desert some 560 km south of the capital, Ulaanbaatar.
Integrated into pre-fabricated containerized E-houses, ABB’s scope of supply includes 22/6.6 kV switchgears, DC power supply, uninterrupted power supply, transformers, 400 V motor control centers, variable-speed drives, variable-speed multi-drives, as well as a power management system based on state-of-the-art process control systems 800xA and IEC 61850. Equipment incorporation into pre-fab E-houses reduces onsite work, optimizing time schedules, while providing stability under extreme temperatures.
“ABB’s electrification solutions will allow optimal conditions to reach the highest production at the lowest energy costs,” said Giuseppe di Marco, head of ABB’s mining business. “Our established relationship with the customer, early involvement, as well as first-class equipment were major factors for winning this order.”
Deliveries are expected begin from Q4 2013 through Q2 2014 with plant start-up slated for Q4 2014.
Established in 1993, MAK is one of Mongolia’s largest national mining companies with three open-pit coal mines in operation. With a targeted production volume of 40,000 metric tons per day of copper, the Tsagaan Suvarga project is expected to become the No. 3 copper mine in Mongolia.
