A military coup on March 22 displaced Mali’s sitting government. Coup organizers stated that they were motivated by government failure to suppress a rebellion in northern Mali.
Four days after the coup, the situation appeared to be relatively calm. Mali’s gold mines were reported to be operating as usual, and companies with mines in the country were keeping a watchful eye on developments.
Mali is Africa’s third-largest gold-producing country after South Africa and Ghana.
