Atlas Copco claims its newly developed hydraulic rock drill is one of the most powerful underground handheld units on the market. The new drill, called the HRD100, features a “smart” power pack that monitors all vital functions and can automatically compensate for pressure changes. According to the company, the HRD100 offers a high drilling rate and notable energy efficiency compared with conventional pneumatic or electric rock drills-and it is quiet, with a measured noise level approximately 50% less than that of a pneumatic drill. A polyurethane cover muffles noise and adds external protection, allowing the unit to withstand a drop from 2 m. The HRD system consists of the rock drill (RD100), power pack (PP100) and a selection of water-powered pusher legs. All hoses and cables are included.
User-centric design is at the core of the HRD-system, according to the company: one example is a soft-start function that makes collaring especially easy; another is the replaceable rotation chuck, which saves service time. One-handed operation and carrying handles make the system more convenient to use in tight conditions. The stackable PP100 power pack basically manages itself, according to Atlas Copco. Its smart functions monitor oil flow and oil temperature, and its water cooling and automatic overheat protection improve safety and reliability. The system also monitors oil volume and compensates for pressure differences, enabling the operator to work with the PP100 at a 45° angle without power loss. Simple tools make it easy to top off hydraulic oil in the mine.
The HRD100 features a five-step water adjustment that provides the right amount of water for any drilling task. When drilling stops, the water flow also stops automatically-but the operator has the capability to force-feed water to flush the drill if jammed. To minimize waste, the water used for cooling and flushing also powers the pusher leg.
