In early April, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that prompt prices (or spot sales) for coal from both the Central Appalachian (CAPP) coalfields and the Illinois Basin (ILB) climbed above $100 per ton.
For the week ending April 1, the EIA reported a price increase of $8.85/ton to $106.15/ton for CAPP coal. The agency also reported a $12.55/ton increase to $109.55 for ILB coals. in Central Appalachia. The spot prices quoted by the EIA are in dollars per short ton and are for delivery in the third quarter of 2022.
This is the first time CAPP spot prices have exceeded $100/ton since 2008. ILB coal has never sold for more than $100/ton.
