Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions decentralized its workshop in Buenas Aires and opened a service center in Caleta Olivia, Santa Cruz, Argentina. The development will improve response times, increase service quality, and tighten relationships with local mining clients, the supplier reported.

The center has a 1,775-m2 main service area for repairs by up to four service teams, an area for component repairs, training rooms and offices. It is designed for repairs of all types of Sandvik components and equipment, including surface and underground drills and underground trucks and loaders.

The service center opened in July and is equipped with advanced systems such as South America’s first test bench for transmissions, axles and converters. It helps to guarantee reliability and quality of repairs, Sandvik said.

“The objective of the Sandvik service center in Caleta Olivia is to deliver results with high quality standards in a timely manner,” said Sebastián Issel, country manager, Sandvik Argentina S.A. “To do this, we are strongly committed to the strategic development of local suppliers.”

Separately, Sandvik moved its South African headquarters to a new 62,000-m2 site in Kempton Park near Johannesburg.

The site has three workshops, of which two are for remans, and will give the supplier the needed capacity to meet local production and quality requirements, Sandvik said.

“Our investment in local manufacturing capacity is an important vote of confidence in South Africa and its mining sector,” said Simon Andrews, managing director, Sandvik South Africa. “The quality of our work is also world class, allowing Sandvik to shift certain manufacturing duties from elsewhere in the world to our new facility.”
