Noveau Monde signed a collaboration agreement with Caterpillar to develop a zero-emission solution for the Matawinie Mine. Caterpillar will develop, test and produce zero-emission machines for the mine as part of becoming the exclusive supplier of an all-electric mining fleet for the mine by 2028.

Nouveau Monde said the development shows it is spearheading the electrification of the industry. “We are proud to be a driving force for our peers as we strive to electrify our operations to meet our carbon neutrality commitments while maintaining the productivity and efficiency standards of our mining operations,” CEO Eric Desaulniers said.

Separately, Caterpillar acquired Minetec Pty Ltd. from Codan Ltd. Based in Australia, Minetec specializes in communications technology, and supplies high-precision tracking and data communications networks and purpose-built software.

The acquisition speaks to Cat’s commitment to the expansion of Cat MineStar Solutions for integrated underground operations, the company said.

“The acquisition will further drive integration of Minetec’s world-class underground products and capabilities, such as task management, high-precision tracking, wireless communications and proximity detection into MineStar,” said Jim Hawkins, general manager, Cat MineStar Solutions. “As miners move to automate underground mines, this will further enhance MineStar’s ability to provide the equivalent of GPS underground and improve safety and productivity.”
