Outotec reported it will provide sintering and ferrochrome smelting technology for the expansion of Outokumpu’s ferrochrome plant in Tornio, Finland. The new sintering plant and smelter will double Outokumpu’s ferrochrome production capacity. The contract value is approximately €45 million ($60.2 million).

The contract’s scope includes engineering of the sintering plant and the smelter as well as delivery of key process equipment. The new sintering plant will treat 600,000 mt/y of chromite concentrate into pellets to be used as feed for a 100-MW ferrochrome furnace, which Outotec claims will be the world’s largest and most efficient furnace of its kind.

The deliveries will take place during 2011 and in the first half of 2012.
