Sibanye-Stillwater confirmed that a tragic incident occurred on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at its Burnstone project, located near the town of Balfour, South Africa, where a newly constructed surface waste rock conveyor collapsed. The collapse occurred while five contractor employees were installing a head pulley of the conveyor infrastructure. Four were fatally injured, while a fifth person sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment. Expressing their sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, the company said a full investigation into the exact cause of the incident is underway.
