A localized seismic event occurred in the eastern end of Panel Cave No. 2 at Newcrest Mining’s Cadia block caving operation in New South Wales at 4 a.m. on Friday, July 2. The company said no injuries were sustained and all personnel working in the affected area were accounted for and safely returned to the surface. Mining operations in all other areas, development activities and above-ground operation all continued uninterrupted.
Inspections determined that past investment in ground support was effective in preventing damage to the infrastructure with only localized damage to roadways and ground support near the intersection of two extraction drives and minor ground support damage to a nearby ventilation raise.
Newcrest has been working with the New South Wales Resources Regulator and a prohibition notice was placed around the affected area. A geotechnical report has been completed and submitted to the regulator for approval to begin rehabilitation activities.
The company said this event will have no impact on fiscal year 2022 gold and copper production.
