Before expected, Codelco’s Chuquicamata Underground project has met one of its most symbolic milestones. The operation has mined its first ton of ore. More than 8,000 tons of ore have been mined from the five headings, which are transported by low-profile trucks to the bottom of the pit. After a new approach was announced in 2017, construction of the project continued according to the schedule. Mining began officially in May and the commissioning of the mineral management system will take place during the second half of this year.

In February, Project Manager Rodrigo Barrera said the preparation of 70,000 m² relating to the initial macroblocks of the mine was completed.
