A modern integrated mining operations center was installed in Antofagasta by Minera Centinela, marking a milestone in mining as it was the first facility of its kind in the region. The Integrated Operations Management Project (GIO in its Spanish acronym) seeks to decentralize one of the most important economic activities in the country, while at the same time benefiting the quality of life of the company’s workers.

Through cutting-edge technology and the remote work of its operators, the GIO project will allow further progress and the development of innovative, sustainable and safer mining.

The new control center will allow directing and executing all the mine processes remotely and in real time.

“This is part of the technological changes that our company, Centinela, and mining are experiencing, working from remote locations in real time and allowing processes to be optimized,” Antofagasta Minerals CEO Ivan Arriagada said.

Minera Centinela currently operates six pits and three processing plants, in addition to a dock for loading and shipping concentrates. The total investment for the project was around US$66 million, considering instrumentation at the plant and also in the city of Antofagasta.
