The University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) re-established a metallurgical engineering program. Metallurgical engineering was started early in the twentieth century at UNR but evolved into materials science and engineering during the last decade. The mining industry recently requested that metallurgical engineering be re-established at the university and has supplied financial support for this program. Faculty in extractive metallurgy include: Dr. Maurice Fuerstenau, Dr. Carl Nesbitt, and Dr. Thom Seal, P.E. The faculty have extensive academic and industry experience, bringing a diverse range of expertise to the program.
A goal of the program is to provide many of the extractive metallurgy courses on-line so people can continue their education at both the baccalaureate and graduate levels. An on-line M.S. program is being developed so that engineers can receive an advanced degree in extractive metallurgy while working full-time, at locations around the world. Several undergraduate and graduate classes are presently available on-line: Heap Leaching, Hydrometallurgy, Mineral Processing, and Pyrometallurgy. New on-line classes will be offered next spring, including Advanced Mineral Processing, Environmental Chemistry of Metals, and Qualified Persons Studies.
