Agreement Sets Funding Requirements for Samarco Dam Disaster Recovery

Samarco Mineração and its joint-venture shareholders, Vale and BHP Billiton, signed an agreement in early March with Brazil’s federal government, the Brazilian states of Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais, and certain other public authorities to fund restoration of the environment and communities affected by the disastrous Samarco tailings dam failure that occurred on November 5. The disaster killed 19 people, devastated surrounding communities and polluted the Rio Doce for hundreds of kilometers downstream.

Lithium Americas, SQM Announce Chilean JV

Lithium Americas Corp. (formerly Western Lithium USA) announced an agreement with Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) to enter into a 50/50 joint venture to develop the Cauchari-Olaroz lithium project in Jujuy, Argentina.

Las Bambas Begins Shipping Copper Concentrate

MMG Ltd. began commissioning the Las Bambas copper mine in southern Peru in the fourth quarter of 2015 and started shipping copper concentrate in mid-January as part of the commissioning process. Project construction was essentially complete as of late January, with remaining activities largely associated with the molybdenum concentrator and new facilities at the Port of Matarani.

NGEx Reports Positive PEA for Chile/Argentina Project

NGEx Resources has reported positive results from a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) of proposed integrated, sequential development of the Josemaría and Los Helados copper-gold deposits, located about 12 km from each other on opposites sides of the Chile/Argentina border. The integrated project has been named Project Constellation.
