Fortescue Supporting Aboriginal-owned Mine

Fortescue Metals Group announced on September 14 that it has entered into a commercial agreement with Australian Aboriginal Mining Corp. (AAMC) that will enable the establishment of Australia’s first Aboriginal-owned and operated iron ore mine. Under the agreement, Fortescue will provide AAMC with access to Fortescue infrastructure, with AAMC able to deliver up to 2 million mt/y from its projects to either Fortescue’s port or rail facilities over a five-year period.

Exploration by Northern Star Extending the Lives of its Mines

Northern Star Resources reported that its A$50 million exploration program during its financial year ending June 30 increased gold resources at its mines and exploration properties in Western Australia by 2.7 million oz to 8.9 million oz, a gain of 44%. The company’s reserves increased by 26% to 1.5 million oz over the same period.

MMG Gives Go-ahead for Dugald River Project

MMG Ltd. has approved an updated development plan for its underground Dugald River zinc project in the North West region of Queensland. The updated plan assumes a mine production rate of 1.5 million metric tons per year (mt/y), construction of a concentrator, and annual production of approximately 160,000 mt of zinc in concentrate, plus byproducts, over an estimated 28-year mine life.

Ranger 3 Deeps Uranium Project Shelved

Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) announced in early June that it is not proceeding to a final feasibility study of its proposed Ranger 3 Deeps underground mine at its Ranger mine in Australia’s Northern Territory. Open-pit mining ended at the Ranger mine in 2012, and ERA has been processing stockpiled ore since that time.
