Barrick Discovers Two New Gold Zones at Cortez PDF Print E-mail

Barrick Gold has made two significant gold discoveries on its 100%-owned Cortez property in Nevada. The discoveries—Red Hill and Goldrush—are located 6 km southeast of Barrick’s Cortez Hills mine and 24 km southeast of its Pipeline mine. Based on the results of wide-spaced drilling, Barrick has outlined two zones of gold mineralization along a 7-km-long trend.

Quadra FNX Sees Promising Future for Victoria Project PDF Print E-mail

Quadra FNX Mining has announced an NI 43-101 compliant inferred resource totaling 12.5 million mt, grading 2.3% copper, 2.2% nickel, and 8.5 g/mt total precious metals, for its Victoria project in Sudbury, Ontario. The grades are well above those historically found in the Sudbury district, and the deposit remains open in all directions.

Iamgold Raises Greenfields Spending PDF Print E-mail

Iamgold has budgeted $43 million for greenfields exploration during 2011, up from $37.6 million spent in 2010. The company’ greenfields exploration portfolio includes 28 projects in nine countries in West Africa and the Americas. Approximately 118,000 m of drilling is planned across all Iamgold exploration sites during 2011, with an additional 46,425 m of air core drilling budgeted for the Essakane mine property in Burkina Faso. Projects of special interest include the Kalana and Siribaya projects in Mali.

Rio Tinto Signs Farm-in Agreement for South Australian IOCGU Deposit PDF Print E-mail

Rio Tinto Exploration has signed a conditional agreement with Tasman Resources for the funding of an accelerated exploration program on Tasman’s 100%-owned exploration license that contains the Vulcan iron oxide-copper-gold-uranium (IOCGU) prospect, 30 km from BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam mine in South Australia. Under the terms of the agreement, Rio Tinto will make an initial upfront cash payment of A$10 million after satisfaction of certain conditions, including the execution of a formal agreement and obtaining Aboriginal Heritage clearance for exploration over the southern portion of the Vulcan prospect area.

AngloGold Ashanti Grows Reserves at Tropicana PDF Print E-mail

AngloGold Ashanti increased gold reserves at the Tropicana project in Western Australia to 3.91 million oz as of the end of June 2011, up from 3.37 million oz at year-end 2010. Project resources have also increased, up from 5.28 million oz to 5.36 million oz.

VMS Reports High-Grade Copper Discovery at Super Zone PDF Print E-mail

VMS Ventures reported in mid-May 2011 the HudBay Minerals exploration team drilling the Super Zone property 100 km east of Flin Flon, Manitoba, had discovered two zones of high-grade copper in a single hole. HudBay has an option from VMS on the property and is the project operator. The discovery hole is located 1.8 km northwest of the Reed copper deposit, where HudBay and VMS have a joint venture development agreement.

New Copper-Moly-Gold Discovery at Oyu Tolgoi PDF Print E-mail

Ivanhoe Mines and BHP Billiton have discovered a new zone of shallow copper-molybdenum-gold mineralization 10 km north of the Ivanhoe Mines Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mining complex currently under construction in southern Mongolia. The discovery, known as Ulaan Khud North, extends the known strike length of the Oyu Tolgoi mineralized system by an additional 3 km to the north.

Geoscience Group Blasts Australian Government Inaction PDF Print E-mail

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), in a statement issued in early January, charged the Australian federal government’s mining-tax-focused Policy Transition Group (PTG) with completely “missing the point” because the group had not made any recommendations that would support greenfields exploration in Australia.
