Brakes for Mine Hoist Applications

Twiflex has launched a larger, enhanced version of its VMS-2-SP safety brake, aimed specifically at the mine hoist market. Similar to the VMS-2, the VMS-3 is a spring applied, hydraulically released safety brake, but offers faster operation and superior performance, delivering a maximum static brake force of 300 kN (with 1-mm air gap), and 230 kN (with 3-mm air gap) of dynamic braking force, with the added benefit of infinite fatigue life.

The mine-ready design of the VMS-3 is characterized by a strengthened, longer housing, which integrates additional springs for improved braking force. Totally sealed to provide corrosion and dust protection, the new design offers users the set-up and maintenance advantages of tamper-proof pad/air-gap adjustment, the facility for external pad retraction, on-site torque adjustment and a park-off feature for achieving fast seal changes without the use of special tools, according to Twiflex.

The VMS-3 design also integrates small size pistons for quicker reaction times, coupled with an improved drainage system and reduced retraction pressure of between 120–160 bar (depending on rating). In addition, the status of the VMS-3 braking system can be linked to a PLC, providing warnings for such factors as low pad pressure and alarms for high oil temperature, low oil level and clogged pressure filters. www.twiflex.com

Dust-Free Haul Roads

EarthZyme and Dust Stop are ideal for heavy industries that require strong reliable roads that are also friendly to the environment, says Cypher Environmental Ltd. The Winnipeg, Canada, company reports that these products have been successful in pilot operation at a major coal mine in Colombia where, to extract nearly 2 million mt/y of coal the mine moves approximately 15 million m3/y of material using Caterpillar 793 and 777 trucks on double truck lanes, normally creating a large volume of dust. According to the company, haul trucks have traveled on an EarthZyme-treated road for approximately 22 hours a day, with the 793s maintaining a five-minute frequency and the 777s cycling 1.3 times per five-minute interval, yet so effective was the product that any dust evident during haulage came from the material in the trucks. That is where Dust Stop comes in: a coating of this product prevents dispersion of hazardous particulate matter from the loads. Cypher Environmental claims the stability of the treated surfaces can dramatically reduce maintenance costs and produce savings in lost man hours, vehicle downtime, and medical and insurance costs. www.cypherltd.com

Komatsu Introduces Two New Models

Komatsu America Corp. recently unveiled a pair of new earthmoving machines—a mining-class bulldozer and a quarry-class wheel loader—both of which offer a number of performance improvements over previous versions. The company’s new D375A-6 crawler dozer, weighing 157,940 lb and powered by a Komatsu SAA6D170E-5 diesel rated at 636 gross hp, has been designed to compete for market share against Caterpillar’s D10T. The D375A-6’s more powerful engine, offering an 85 net hp increase over the previous D375A-5E0 model, is the same unit used in Komatsu’s PC 1250LC-8 hydraulic excavator (rated at 672 hp) and in the HD465-7 rigid body hauler truck (rated at 715 hp). According to Komatsu, an updated full-U 28.8-yd3 blade on the D375A-6 allows for increased production without increasing blade width or reducing digging force; the shape of the blade is similar to the next-size-class-larger Komatsu dozer, the D475A-5EO. Komatsu says the new dozer includes 16 new standard mining features including high-mounted head lights; battery and starter isolator box; centralized grease points; and manual engine stop switches. Optional mining features include right and left hand platforms with handrails and HID work lights.

In addition to the new dozer, Komastsu added the WA480-6 wheel loader to its product line. The 299-hp machine has an operating weight of 55,920 to 56,340 lb and a dumping clearance of 10 ft 6 in. when equipped with a 6-yd3 general purpose bucket. According to the company, the WA480-6 has a newly designed Large Capacity Torque Converter that provides the machine with excellent tractive effort, improved acceleration and improved hill climbing ability. The loader is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D125E-5 diesel engine with an Electronic Heavy Duty Common Rail fuel injection system and is EPA Tier 3 emission certified. The machine is fitted with Komatsu’s EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System), allowing the operator to stay informed of all machine functions on the easy-to-read monitor. An automatic transmission with Electronically Controlled Modulation Valve makes operating functions easier; for example, with the touch of a finger, a kick-down switch automatically downshifts from second to first when beginning the digging cycle; in reverse, it automatically up shifts from first to second. Conversely, a hold switch keeps the transmission in either third of fourth gear speed when auto shift is selected. www.komatsuamerica.com
