Komatsu America’s new GD655-5 motor grader, equipped with a U.S. EPA Tier 3 emission-certified Komatsu SAA6D107E-1 diesel providing 9% more power (218 hp), weighs 35,351  lb in standard configuration. According to the company, a completely new power train design positions the engine at the rear of the machine, which, along with increased weight on the front axle, provides better control. The diesel engine’s three-stage 2-Mode system allows the operator to select either an economy mode or a power mode, depending on the work application, with three levels of power from gear one through gear eight, providing more productivity with a 20% fuel consumption savings when compared with the previous model. The new dual-mode power shift transmission, designed and built specifically for Komatsu graders, provides a lockup torque converter mode as well as a direct drive mode. An anti-stall feature for direct drive allows the transmission to shift to torque converter mode before the grader stalls in a low speed application, thus allowing better operator control.

A new hexangular-shaped cab eliminates the front corner pillars for greater visibility, and includes tinted windows with intermittent wiper/washers on all glass. Air conditioner/heater, electric rear window defrost, 12-volt power port, radio, lunch box holder, cup holder and coat hook are all standard. The console-mounted hydraulic controls are arranged in an industry standard pattern on each side of the steering wheel, with Komatsu-designed control valves built specifically for graders. A color monitor allows the operator to check current machine functions. Large service doors open wide for easy access to service points and daily routine maintenance. Refueling can be easily done from the ground. In addition, a new hydraulic driven reversible fan saves power and reduces noise, and when working in dusty conditions can be reversed to clear the radiator.
