Sandvik, IBM Collaborate on Underground Productivity
Sandvik, in making the announcement, pointed out that improvements in onboard instrumentation and data gathering capabilities in heavy equipment offer opportunities to employ advanced analytics and models to identify and resolve productivity issues and improve process optimization and performance. Sandvik cited a recent McKinsey Global Institute report that predicts deployment of digital technologies will create as much as $100 billion of value to resource-producing companies by 2035.

SA Contract Miner Leans Heavily on Simulation Training for Operators
MCC Contract Mining & Services, a division of South Africa’s eXtract Group, is investing substantially to develop one of the largest operator training center projects in Africa, according to simulator supplier Immersive Technologies.
Immersive said it is contributing to MCC’s project through the introduction of a Managed Workforce Development Solution, which is intended to directly improve operator skills and their understanding of the factors that affect asset productivity, cost reduction and safety. This solution will be distributed across the eXtract Operator Training Academy and three mining operations. It incorporates seven Advanced Equipment Simulators, 19 simulator modules (or Conversion Kits) and seven Pre-Start Inspection training & assessment systems. This solution will be staffed by a team of embedded Immersive Technologies personnel servicing all four locations including a full time business improvement specialist, a dedicated training manager and operator training personnel.

Cat Enlists Former U.S. AG to Investigate Tax Problems
Caterpillar Inc. announced on March 16 that it has retained former U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr as outside counsel. Jim Umpleby, who became chief executive officer of Caterpillar on January 1, 2017, said Barr will review matters relating to the search warrants recently executed at Caterpillar facilities and assist the company in appropriately addressing those matters.

Mine Door Supplier Names Jennmar Sole U.S. Distributor
Jennmar Corp. has signed an agreement to become the exclusive U.S. distributor of American Mine Door’s EcoVent equipment doors for underground mining applications. The agreement is for a term of three years with a three-year option. The alliance expands Jennmar’s mine ventilation offerings, which now include metal stoppings, man doors, foam packs and equipment doors.
