Essen, Germany-based consulting and engineering company DMT has, for a number of years, been involved in geodetic, geotechnical and geophysical monitoring in hazardous environments through numerous geomonitoring pro- jects. To process and analyze the extensive measurement data from various measuring instruments and sensors, the company said it has developed a hardware and software solution, which stores and analyzes all gathered data in such a way that it’s available for sharing.

The product, DMT Safeguard, is a modular system for safe and reliable risk assessment for projects in mining, civil engineering and environmental monitoring. Examples of areas in which it can be applied include the monitoring of slope stability in mining, the measurement of noise and vibrations during tunnel building work, or the monitoring of subsidence and sinkholes in former mining areas.
DMT Safeguard includes the following functions:
- Data collection (data port module): Integration of heterogeneous data from a variety of sources (geodesy, geophysics, geotechnical engineering, hydrology, integration of image and video data);
- Data management (core server module): Central database on high-performance servers for good data accessibility and security;
- Data visualization (Web-view module): Online user portal for data presentation with interactive web GIS maps;
- Document management; and
- Data analysis (evaluation and alarm module): Notification by SMS or email, as well as on-site signals.
“The data from the complex monitoring network is consistently merged, saved centrally and securely managed, while simultaneously displaying up-to-date results to numerous users via Web-view,” said project manager Karsten Zimmermann. “The advantage is that this Internet-based monitoring solution is not manufacturer-specific and delivers the high standard of safety the TUV Nord Group is known for.”
DMT said Safeguard is designed as a SaaS solution (software as a service), a new service from DMT that will gradually be enhanced with additional project-specific functions.
