Chilean Study to Focus on Cleaner Zinc Production

Roasting of ore concentrates, the traditional method used to produce zinc, generates high levels of pollution, particularly from the release of sulphur in the form of SO2. A team of researchers from Chile’s Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) is currently pursuing a goal of reducing the environmental contamination resulting from the process. The university, along with Innova-Corfo and VIACHA—a Bolivian mineral distributor company—have committed 242 million pesos to advance the project.

Gain Improved Tank Slurry Agitation via Swirl Flow Technology

Large-scale tanks with working volumes in the range of 1,000-5,000 m3 per tank are used in the minerals processing industry to provide feed storage and various continuous hydrometallurgical processes such as leaching (digestion), precipitation, adsorption, oxidation, tailings washing and neutralization. Typically, single or multiple impellers with vertical baffles inside these tanks are used to provide solids suspension and mixing. In some applications, draft tube agitator or air-lifting pipes are used.

Dundee to Carry Out Arsenic Stabilization Study

Dundee Sustainable Technologies (DST), based in Quebec, Canada, has entered into a retainer agreement with an unidentified international gold mining company to evaluate the feasibility of integrating DST’s proprietary arsenic stabilization technology for the sequestration of arsenical matter produced in the gold extraction process. This technology, according to DST, enables sequestration of arsenic in a stable glass form.
