BHP Billiton announced the appointment of Chris Campbell as president of its iron ore business, replacing Ian Ashby who will become CEO of the Western Australia Iron Ore production joint venture with Rio Tinto. In his new role, Campbell will have overall responsibility for the company’s global iron ore operations. The company also announced that Don Argus will retire as chairman and a non-executive director. Paul Anderson and Dr. Gail de Planque have retired from the board of directors, and Malcolm Broomhead and Carolyn Hewson will be appointed non-executive directors at the end of March.

 


Rio Tinto has appointed Ian Bauert as managing director, China. Based in Shanghai, he will lead Rio Tinto’s employees in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.


De Beers appointed Neo Moroka to the newly created position of resident director and CEO of De Beers Botswana.


Dr. Chris A. Fleming has been named the recipient of the 2010 Canadian Mineral Processor of the Year Award. This award recognizes members of the Metallurgical Society of CIM who have contributed significantly to the advancement of metallurgy in Canada, either through their career or outstanding individual contributions. He is vice president, global metallurgy, SGS, and has authored or co-authored 82 technical publications, been awarded 15 patents and contributed to several technical books on various aspects of extractive metallurgy. He is recognized throughout the industry for his contributions to the commercialization of the carbon-in-pulp and resin-in-pulp processes in gold extraction, as well as for the development of the Augment, Hannah, SART, and Platsol processes.


Silver Standard Resources Inc. announced Robert A. Quartermain has resigned as president and CEO. The board of directors is conducting a search for his successor. Pending the completion of the search, A.E. Michael Anglin will step in as interim president and CEO. Anglin has been a director of Silver Standard since 2008.
