James R. “Jim Bob” Moffett, chairman and co-founder of Freeport McMoRan, will step down. The board has elected Gerald J. Ford as nonexecutive chairman. During his more than 50-year career in the natural resource industry, Moffett became an icon as an explorationist. He was instrumental in the discovery and development of the Grasberg deposit in Indonesia, which has grown to become one of the world’s largest copper and gold deposits. Moffett has served as executive chairman of FCX since 2003 and previously served as the company’s CEO from 1995 to 2003. In 1969, Moffett and two associates founded McMoRan Oil & Gas Co., which merged with Freeport Minerals.

People - December 2015

Anglo American announced several changes. Paulo Castellari will step down from his position as CEO of Anglo American’s iron ore business in Brazil to pursue other opportunities. Peter Whitcutt has been appointed as CEO of Anglo American’s marketing business, having served as group director of strategy, business development and marketing since 2013. The company appointed Didier Charreton as group director of human resources. Also, Phuthuma Nhleko, a nonexecutive director, has decided to step down from the Anglo board.

Peabody Energy elected Robert A. Malone to the nonexecutive role of chairman effective January 1. The veteran executive has been serving as lead independent director of Peabody since January 2013. He will succeed Gregory H. Boyce, who will retire from Peabody effective December 31. Malone is the retired executive vice president of British Petroleum and former chairman and president of BP America Inc.

People - October 2015

Chris Curfman, vice president of Cat’s Mining Sales & Support Division, will retire at the end of the year. He joined Cat in 1994 and was appointed vice president of the Global Mining Division in 2004. His division will be integrated into the existing Global Mining machine business divisions. The surface mining sales and support teams will join the Hauling & Extraction Division, which will be renamed the Surface Mining & Technology Division, led by Caterpillar Vice President Tom Bluth. The underground mining sales and support teams will join the Material Handling and Underground Division, led by Caterpillar Vice President Denise Johnson.
