This year Engineering & Mining Journal (E&MJ) expanded on a successful program and readers can expect more in 2012. In addition to publishing the mining industry’s favorite trade journal, Mining Media improved several existing services and offered a few new products tied to E&MJ. Editorially, E&MJ continues to provide a wealth of information with each edition and next year the magazine will be published monthly instead of the current 10-time program. To see what E&MJ plans to cover in 2012, readers can visit the Mining Media International website (www.mining-media.com) and download the 2012 media kit. The media kit has the editorial plans for all of the Mining Media titles. If something piques your interest and your mining company is doing something noteworthy in that area, please contact me and we will consider working with the mine on a story. The calendar is a mere guideline and E&MJ will always cover important stories as they develop.

Click on the E&MJ tab (www.e-mj.com) and past visitors will notice that Mining Media has made some improvements. Digital editions of the magazines are available under the Magazine tab. For those readers in remote locations that struggle with Air Mail from the United States, this might be a valuable option to get an early glimpse of the magazine. Also under the magazine tab, readers can subscribe free of charge to the E&MJ eNewsletter. Each week as the website is populated with news stories, Mining Media e-mails the E&MJ eNews (html and text versions). It’s an inexpensive way to remain informed about what’s happening in the mining and mineral processing business. Readers can also update subscriber information as well. Look for E&MJ to build on digital initiatives and social media in the next year.

In addition to the E&MJ website, Mining Media also e-mails an eJournal, WoMP (World of Mining Professionals), to a large group of readers. A video feature on WoMP attracted a lot of attention this year. Various vendors took advantage of this tool to showcase equipment. Mining Media also maintains the World Mining Equipment website (www.wme.com), which is an interactive buyers guide. The next time the mine is considering a purchase, give it a try. At last count, more than 3,000 companies that serve the mining and mineral processing sector were listed along with their respective products. The site continues to snowball.

This year, Mining Media hosted four technical conferences: Haulage & Loading, Longwall USA, Mineral Processing and Coal Handling & Storage. E&MJ organized its first mineral processing conference, and although the turn out for the event was not as high as had been anticipated, those that attended found value in the presentations. In fact, the Tailings Management article in this edition is based on one of the 12 presentations from the conference.

Looking ahead to next year, many equipment manufacturers and service providers are already preparing for the two largest mining trade shows. Expomin, which takes place April 9-13, 2012, in Santiago, Chile, is the largest mining trade show outside of North America. And, the largest mining trade show is MINExpo, which takes place September 24-26, 2012, in Las Vegas. If it’s anything like past experiences, the industry will see a steady stream of marketing rollouts that will build to a crescendo in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, readers can continue to rely on the E&MJ editorial team to provide the quality coverage they have come to expect over the years. If you like what you see or you see room for improvement, please feel free to drop me a note. Thank you. Enjoy this edition of E&MJ.
